VMware Cloud on AWS (The Enterprise Class SDDC Software of VMware to the AWS cloud)

VMware Cloud on AWS solves these migration challenges by delivering a hybrid cloud service that integrates familiar VMware’s flagship Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) technologies compute, storage and network virtualization products (VMware vSphere®, VMware vSANTM and VMware NSX®) along with VMware vCenter® management as well as robust disaster protection, and optimizes it to run on dedicated, elastic, Amazon EC2 bare-metal infrastructure.

“VMware Cloud on AWS helps us build on our success with VMware in our private, on-premises environment and cost-effectively extend services to a global hybrid cloud.”

Why VMware Cloud on AWS
  • Fast reduce migration effort from multiple months to weeks.
  • Cost-effective no re-factoring of applications needed.
  • Low risk migrate live without retrofit, run your applications on familiar and proven VMware environments combined with global AWS footprint, reach and scale.
  • Simple and consistent no staff retraining or revamping of operational processes.
For Customer's : Best of both worlds, public and private, with a best-in-class integrated hybrid service for existing and new applications.
For Sellers : A huge opportunity to advance your customer relationships and be a strategic advisor as they adopt public cloud.
For Partners : Opens new monetization opportunities with value-added services, and augments value of VMware on-premises offerings.

Partnership that Drives Value and Differentiation for Everyone

VMware Cloud on AWS enables VMware to offer the entire SDDC stack, including vSphere, vSAN, and NSX, as a combined offering, while also providing greater value for these technologies on-premises. For AWS, the service provides a platform for expanding their customer's consumption of underlying AWS cloud infrastructure while creating an opportunity to modernize vSphere-based workloads by using innovative AWS services. Lastly, for the partnership, the service drives leadership and establishes credibility in the hybrid cloud category.

Compelling Customer Value: The Best of VMware and AWS

VMware and AWS created a joint engineering partnership to address the challenges of incompatible on-premises and public cloud environments. The goal of the partnership is to join two leaders in their respective markets to bring a truly differentiated and compelling solution to customers. Each company brings the best of its capabilities to the joint service. VMware, the de-facto technology standard for enterprise data centers, provides its market-leading compute, storage, and network virtualization that supports a broad range of business-critical workloads. AWS provides a platform that enables flexible consumption economics, access to the broadest set of innovative cloud services, and a large footprint of global data centers.

VMware Cloud on AWS —In Summary

VMware Cloud on AWS offers proven enterprise capabilities on the world's most popular public cloud. VMware customers benefit from all the AWS experience operating large and global infrastructure footprint and all the VMware SDDC technologies that they know and trust, delivered as a cloud service. The service offers five distinct advantages that result in rapid time to value over other alternatives.

Customer Options

• AWS host — The customer must choose either i3 or r5. If they select r5 then they need to decide the amount of EBS storage which can be 15, 20, 25, 30, or 35 terabytes. All r5 hosts in a cluster have to have identical amount of EBS storage.

• The number of hosts - The minimum configuration for a production system is 2-hosts to provide failure protection. Above the minimum customers can purchase hosts in 1-unit increments. Note that all hosts in a cluster have to be of the same type. Maximum cluster size is 16 hosts, but customers can have up to 10 clusters per SDDC, and an unlimited number of SDDCs per organization. There is a 30-day 1-host option available, but that is intended for trying the service or to get started quickly. It is not for production workloads.

• Commitment term - Today VMware Cloud on AWS offers hourly, 1-year, and 3-year commitments. The longer the commitment the lower the per unit time price. For example a 3-year commitment is 50% less than on-demand for the same period of time. A 1-year commitment is 30% less than on-demand for the same period of time.

• Exiting traffic - Any traffic exiting VMware Cloud on AWS is subject to standard AWS egress charges. These vary by data volume. The first 10 terabytes are 0.15 cents per gigabyte. There are also charges for cross-AZ traffic and cross-Region traffic. Customers typically spend 5-15% of their overall bill on egress charges.

• The base package -The base package contains the following 5 components that were discussed in the previous section. One, AWS hardware. Two, VMware SDDC software containing vSphere, vSAN, NSX, and vCenter. Plus VMware HCX and specific features of vRealize Log Insight Cloud. Three, global support that include live chat and 24x7x360 phone support. Four, life-cycle management with a specified SLA. VMware takes care of infrastructure software updates and hardware remediation to maintain a 3 9s SLA — 99.9%. For Stretched Clusters, the SLA in 4 9s — 99.99%.

• Payment methods - Customers have variety of payment method options from credit cards, purchase orders, or VMware SPP credits. They can purchase the service from VMware, AWS, or one of these companies' partners.

vRealize Operations Support

VMware vRealize Operations can help VMware cloud on AWS customers to optimize, plan and scale their hybrid cloud deployment.

vRealize Operations provides continuous workload optimization and balancing, capacity and cost management, intelligent remediation and integrated compliance.

It provides automated workload balancing, based on business and operational intent, across VMware Cloud on AWS clusters to assures performance for critical applications. It delivers unified monitoring and troubleshooting across VMware Cloud on AWS and vSphere-based private clouds to accelerate the meantime to resolution and decision making.

Real-time, machine learning-driven capacity and cost analytics provide optimization, rightsizing and reclamation across the hybrid cloud, while the latest what-if planning scenarios help customers plan the migration and decide where to deploy new projects. VMware Cloud on AWS billing system integration enables customers to manage and optimize spend.

Built-in configuration and compliance for VMs on VMware Cloud on AWS helps monitor and remediate security configuration as well as compliance stature against common templates like ISO, HIPAA, or against custom compliance standards' costs.
